Photography - Vintage - Colourized - U.S. Civil War - Union soldier and family - 1861

This is a colourized version of a black and white photo taken in July of 1861. It is at a tent city for reserve Union soldiers and their families and was located in Washington, D.C. This family was from Pennsylvania. No one smiled in photos from this era. The kids aren't smiling and neither is the wife. But if you look at this man's face, he looks like he wants to crack a smile but he is holding back.
